Faculty & Staff
What to expect in conflict resolution will vary based on the approach taken to the conflict at hand. Our staff will work with the reporting party to determine which of the options is best suited to the situation reported to our office. No matter which type of conflict resolution you are a part of, you should expect to have the opportunity to share what occurred from your perspective, be heard compassionately, ask questions and be asked questions. You should also expect to discuss opportunities to handle a situation in the future which would ideally resolve the conflict or mitigate the harm caused without intervention from the University. While the process is specific to an incident or series of incidents, SACR aims to have everyone who participates feel more empowered to deal with conflict and challenging situations independently.
No. Alternative Resolution Process does not have a formal “charge” and “finding” process as might occur for a violation of the Code of Student Responsibility or Student Academic Integrity. While the behavior could have risen to that level, the chance to participate in conflict resolution is an alternative process which would not result in any formal record. SACR will retain notes about the meeting(s) and what was discussed, but this does not create a formal disciplinary record. Alternative Resolution participants remain in good standing with the University. Additionally, SACR does not share out information for an Alternative Resolution meeting without consent from the student involved.
If you are involved in a situation where conflict occurred between you and another party at the University, please file an incident report for non-academic misconduct. You are encouraged to specify in the report that you want to participate in the Alternative Resolution. SACR staff will review the report and determine next steps, which may include setting up a meeting to gather more information. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can determine if the situation is appropriate for the Alternative Resolution Process.
Alternative Resolution involves at least one student participant. Depending on the situation, the other party involved may be another student, faculty, or staff member. SACR does have limited scope over faculty and staff members and participation for all parties is voluntary. Depending on the specific type of grievance with faculty or staff, there may be more appropriate resources to handle the student’s concern. If this is the case, SACR staff will contact the reporting party and provide appropriate information on next steps.
